We are going for long weekend here, to Island with 2 volcanos. Elise, our new best friend Nick, Mich from Quebec, who stays at our hostel too, Maria a woman he courts, and 2 of her kids.

Mich, Maria and one daughter on our wild ferry ride -- we rode inside mostly, 'cause the Lake Nicaragua waves were smashing up against us and people topside were getting pretty wet.

first stop Moyogalpa, cafe and lobby of Hospedaje where Mich and Maria will stay. (Nick, Mich, Maria, child,, Elise)

Ran into Max (France?) and his travel mate Vincente -- Germany, not in photo) two guys who stayed at our place briefly back in Granada. Poor Vincente was drunk every night and hungover every day, at least when I met up with him... . But Max was a real shining star

Nick, Elise and I negotiated a cab to Balgues

On the road to far side of Maderas Volcano

cowboys

Home on Ometepe. we're on the main road in Balgues, but also with the most gorgeous lake frontage, and gardens all the way to it. Pretty idyllic, if ever anything can be

the gardens featured a central dining table under the big thatched roof on the left, surrounded by hammocks... .

everywhere I went, kids appeared, and then adults too. my boundaries about giving out paper from my precious sketchbook completely collapsed.

volcanoes were by far the main motif coming up in the kids' artworks. I think it is hardwired? that, and the sun with rays, which seems to be a universal kid thing to put into a drawing.

etc etc... actually this little girl was one of the most persistant workers, asking for feedback every few moments. funny to be able to share a world, and even a language, but it wasn't Spanish or English.

Judy (from Ontario?) who stayed at same hostel, (returns every year) to help with education program in English and computer skills. Here with one student.

Nick, Roberto and Eva. Eva is directing nearby community center, and Roberto is helping to organize a computer lab there.

a drawing subject from the lakefront

he knocked down little fruits out of tree with sling shot, had a nice batch of creepy live bait in the bottle in his pocket, and swam like a dolphin. wish I was 16 again!
